About this Location

By the turn of the last century, Agawam Park and Agawam Lake was a recreational focal point that rivaled the beaches. Crowds gathered to watch an annual Fourth of July regatta, participate in extravagant pageants and attend other outdoor events. A bicycle path wove around the lake and people rowed or sailed to the beach for a swim. The park remains a popular venue for concerts, fairs and holiday celebrations like the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. In August 1923, the World War I Memorial was dedicated at the park with the names of the 325 local men and boys who served in the Great War. Designed by architect William Edgar Moran. A restoration project is now underway to reverse the ravages of time. Work is also ongoing aimed at purifying the lake’s waters and ensuring that the “Jewel of Southampton” never loses its luster. The pool & fountain memorial was dedicated to the Southampton residents who served in World War II and the Korean War in 1943.
