About this Location

Cooper’s Beach is more than the Number 1 beach in America! One of the most recognized and celebrated shorelines in America, it’s known for its wide sandy beach, rolling dunes and sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. But long before it became a destination for summer visitors, this coastline was part of the ancestral homeland of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. The interpretive sign located here acknowledges the deep connection the Shinnecock people have maintained to this land and water for thousands of years. The Shinnecock Nation is one of the oldest self-governing Indigenous communities in the United States and has lived on the East End of Long Island long before the arrival of European settlers in the 1600s. Fishing, whaling, shellfishing, farming and stewardship of the coastline were central to daily life and survival. Like much of Southampton Village history, Cooper’s Beach reflects multiple layers of the American story — Indigenous history, colonial settlement, agriculture, maritime life, and the later rise of Southampton as a summer destination during the Gilded Age and early twentieth century. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, Southampton’s oceanfront began attracting prominent families from New York City who built the grand estates that still line portions of the coastline behind the dunes. Yet despite the growth and transformation of the Village over centuries, the natural beauty of this shoreline remains remarkably unchanged. The beach itself takes its name from the Cooper family, one of Southampton’s historic families whose descendants owned large portions of oceanfront property in this area. Over time, the shoreline became known as “Cooper’s Beach,” eventually evolving into the public beach enjoyed by residents and visitors today. It is important to recognize the beauty of the landscape and the generations of people connected to it — especially the enduring presence and history of the Shinnecock Nation, whose relationship to these waters and lands continues to this day.
