Hamptons United Methodist Church

The Southampton Methodist Episcopal Church, established in the late 18th century, was among the earliest houses of worship founded in Southampton after the colonial era. Serving farmers, tradesmen, whalers and their families, the church quickly became an important center of both spiritual and civic life. Over the centuries, the congregation moved to its present location on Main Street, where the church continues its long tradition of serving the Southampton community. The building is a notable example of Queen Anne-style ecclesiastical architecture and was constructed by prominent local builder Madison Jagger. It displays the distinct late-19th-century vernacular aesthetic choices characteristic of the resort community of Southampton. One example of this is how traditional wooden framing is blended with picturesque and asymmetrical design elements Today, the building remains a place of worship as well as a vital community hub, carrying forward the church’s centuries-old tradition of service. Beyond its religious mission, the congregation continues to give back to neighbors in need, including by providing and distributing holiday meals to local families during Thanksgiving and Christmas. More than simply a historic landmark, the Southampton United Methodist Church is a living part of the Village—a place where Southampton’s past and present continue to meet, and where a tradition of faith, fellowship and community service carries on.
