About this Location

Halfway down Linden Lane, off South Main Street, a historic marker commemorates one of Southampton Village’s charming 20th century residential communities: the Linden Lane Bungalow Community. In 1925, Leon and Isabelle Ward purchased land extending toward Lake Agawam as part of a speculative real estate venture. Their vision was a small community of modest, inviting bungalows designed to offer residents proximity to the lake and a simpler way of life. Originally envisioned as summertime retreats, the homes were intended for year-round living as well. The development reflected a changing Southampton, when the Village was beginning to evolve beyond its agricultural and maritime roots and attract new residents drawn to its natural beauty and waterfront setting. Nearly a century later, the character of the Wards’ original development remains part of Linden Lane’s appeal. What began as an ambitious 1920s real estate venture has become one of the Village’s most coveted residential addresses—a reminder that Southampton’s most desirable places have often been rooted in the simple pleasures of home, community and proximity to the water. Take a walk right down to Lake Agawam for a beautiful vista of the lake and surrounding homes and park. Notice the Bioswale planted recently to mitigate road run-off into the lake.
