About this Location

Known to locals as The Old Post House, the building was originally built as a private farmhouse in 1684, making it one of the oldest structures in Southampton Village. The property was granted to Robert Woolley in 1657, and then Dr. Silas Halsey in 1772, a Revolutionary War patriot. Halsey sold it to Major Zebulon Jessup in 1794. In 1824, he sold it to his son-in-law Captain George Post, a whaling captain, who transformed the old farmhouse into a boarding house. By the late 19th century, Albert J. Post owned the property. He became the first mayor of Southampton Village following its official incorporation in 1894. His sister, Sarah Elizabeth Post White, managed the day-to-day operations. She married Captain Hubert White, and the property passed to the White family, though it was still known as the Post House. It continued as a boarding house/restaurant and by the 1940s, it was run by Pat Ogden, and later in the 60s and 70s, it was owned and operated by Ronnie Kane, who continued its reputation as one of Southampton’s most beloved gathering places, even earning the title of “the Meeting place of the Hamptons” by author Peter Benchley in Holiday Magazine. Today it operates as Blu Mar with pop up restaurants in the summer and still has a hotel, Harpoon House, where guests can stay.
